A while back I submitted to the art project Postcards to Alphaville. The idea is that various artists design postcards to a specific character character in a movie. Its a really neat idea and a ton of great artists are involved. However, they decided my work wasn't up to snuff with the aesthetic of the project. Not being one to take no for an answer, I went ahead and designed my own entry for fun. Repeat: this is not an official piece of work associated with the project, just something i did on my own time for fun.
I chose the character of Wendy from "Wendy and Lucy," Kelly Reichardt's film based on Jon Raymond's short story "Train Choir." If you haven't seen the movie check it out, it's super beutifully shot and very understated. It's definitely one of my favorites. Wendy is sort of cast out into the world alone. Her only companion is Lucy, her dog. Wendy ends up losing track of Lucy and things starts to unravel. I tried to capture some of the raggedness of the character as well as the emptiness. The flowery elements were taken from a few shots in the film where you see things Wendy has doodled in the margins of the notebook where she records her finances. Anyway, I like it. See the movie, judge for yourself
