coming soon! - Volume One

You're hearing it here first. in the near future I'm going to be releasing Volume 1 of Our Ever Improving Living Room! Volume 1 will be a  32 page booklet containing the strips from September 24th 2010 to October 23rd 2010. I'm having it printed by the fine folks at minuteman press. Copies are going to be about 5 dollars each, so if you wanted to own a hard copy of Our Ever Improving Living Room, now is your chance to start the collection. More news on how you can get your hands on them later.

- quick note, for those of you who got minicomics from me at the Draperies show, even though those say "Volume One" on them, they're only 16 pages long, so if you're interested, you can get another expanded copy.

Kevin Answer's his first fan question.

On the previous post I got a comment that I thought might be fun to answer with a proper post, because it has some cool info, also I'm opening the floor to anyone who want's to ask any other questions. My feeble knowledge is yours to enjoy.
Here's what Zoraida wrote:

I love seeing the process!

I recently got a copy of "Process How I make my comics" by Jeffrey Brown and it was an instant favorite. It helps that he includes script excerpts, sketches and other miscellany in the envelope it comes in. I'm looking forward to seeing more of these posts.

Fan Questions:
What kind of paper are your finished strips on? I'm curious, why a nib as opposed to a micron or a regular ball point?

Keep them coming,

And here's my answer:
Thanks! I'm a fan of Jeffrey Brown! I heard he was putting out a process mini, I really want to read it. Any Easy Intimacy was a really influential book for me.

I use Strathmore smooth Bristol. I draw on the 300 series, but a lot of artists recommend the 400 or 500 series, which doesn't bleed as much. I don't really mind the 300 series because i think my work is already kind of rough looking

The nib pen is really the traditional cartooning tool. It can get a lot of different line qualities depending on the way you make marks, how much pressure you apply, etc. Also, the ink from Micron pens tends to brown or fade after time. There are some good "pen" pens out there, and a lot of artists like "brush" pens which sometimes come with cartridges. I've just never really gotten into using those. Once I picked up the dip pen I sorta got attached to it.

Thanks for your questions! Answering fan mail is totally living the dream!

I thought it would be cool to show you guys how I work (sort of)
A lot of the strips have ben done here at my desk, and as you can see it's pretty cramped.
It suits me though.

I've kept most of the ideas and rough sketches in this little flip notebook.
The ruler next to it is the one i use for laying out the strip every day. I draw on a 5X5 grid, so I don't need a full sized ruler. What's nice about that is I can sort of pack up my tools and bring them anywhere. Sometimes I do the comic on location.

this is the strip after it's inked. I use a #107 nib and Bombay black ink, of which I am almost out.

Finished originals, these are from the first week. I do two days to a page. I should have included a picture of how thick the stack is now.

I hope you guys enjoy the glimpse into my process, I'll try to include more stuff like this in the future.

Tonight's comic features guest appearance's galore! Thanks to Ivan Brunetti for sharing (between his thoughts on cartooning) his thoughts on premeditated murder.

Also, in case anyone's been counting, tomorrow night's strip will be number 50. I'm proud to celebrate this milestone by not posting a comic tomorrow, on account of I'm going to be at my folks' house. Don't worry, I'll have you all caught up by the end of the weekend.

Number 47, and a letter from the artist.

It's occurred to me that I haven't written much other than "here's today's comic" in a while. I'd just like to take a minute to talk about what this daily exercise has become and to say thanks to everyone who's commented and complimented on it.

So I started "Our Ever Improving Living Room" as a blog to post about current projects, most of which were school related. However, thanks in part to those projects, it has evolved into this daily diary strip where I can experiment with story telling and comics, and at the same time catalogue the wonderfully mundane elements of life.

I like to think of it as sort of a filter for my memory. I get to pick and choose what's interesting or funny or sad, and share those. It forces me to pay closer attention to the world around me, with the hopes that I can squeeze a comic out of it. Some days are more eventful than others, and take a bit of boiling down.

I hope you're enjoying reading these. I do complain a lot about the ditch I've dug myself into by starting this process, but when I'm able to stack up all the pages of work I've gotten out of this, it's worth it. I'm resisting putting a numerical goal to how many I'm going to do, because once I say it it's set in stone. I would like to try and do one a day for a year, then see where I'm at.

Thanks again.
