Busy Summer

Hey gang,
Here's a peek at the strip I've been working on lately - my next submission to New City. If they run this one it will appear in the music issue, out July 15th, I think.

It's called "I Love, Rock and Roll," and yes that is Avril Lavigne.

Also, I know I say this all the time, but sorry for the lack of daily updates. Work is busy, and I'm working on longer strips and zine submissions this summer.

These big strips have been a really exciting change of pace. I'm drawing at twice the reproduction size, so the originals are all 18x20. Almost everything I've done until now has been to size.

I'll keep posting little things, photos, and drawings of characters on LOST when I can….

Brain Frame 12 - video embedded.

Kevin Budnik reads Dust Motes from Lyra Hill on Vimeo.

The video from BRAIN FRAME 12 is up.

The video of my performace from BRAIN FRAME 12 is up. You can watch it by clicking the Brain Frame link, or going to vimeo: HERE.

I'm going to try to embed the video here later, but it doesn't quite seem to be working right now.

"Dust Motes" is the likely title for the next collection of journal comics I'd like to release as a book.
If you watch the video, or have been reading for a while, you'll see that they're older strips - directly following the first year of my daily strip.

They deal with an ongoing problem though, something that took me a while to realize, and that I'll probably be dealing with forever.

I'm glad to have comics as an outlet though. Drawing keeps my head right, and the amount of support I felt after this performance was incredible.
Thank you for reading, thank you for watching.

My brand new mini comic full of mostly not new strips "Mumblecore Comix." is now available on my website! I'll be dropping some off at Chicago Comics later today, and Quimby's in the coming weeks.
Check it out if you like funny unfunny jokes about people who never make eye contact.

CAKE swag.

I got so much great stuff at CAKE this weekend. First, I want to say thank you to everyone who came out to CAKE this weekend, The organizers, the Center on Halsted, the exhibitors, and those who stopped at the Yeti table and said hi.

It's really intimidating to look at the pile of books on my coffee table knowing that I have to read them, but then I realize that I GET to read them, and that they all represent a small moment of exchanged respect and friendship between comics lovers and creators.

CAKE!

(not pictured above: The Lumpen Magazine comics issue, David Alvarado's "Who Remembers Anyway?", The special edition goodies from LINEWORK 4, and the plush toy that came along with Leigh Luna's "Clementine Fox.")

Tomorrow night I'll be jumping in the ring as part of a COMIC ART BATTLE!
I'm representing Team Chicago, alongside Andy Burkholder, Paul Nudd, Sara Drake, and Lyra Hill. Our competition, representing Team World, are Lisa Hanawalt, Michael DeForge, Patrick Kyle, Ed Luce and Gabrielle Gamboa.
Ezra Clayton Daniels is hosting the event, which takes place immediately following a signing featuring debuts from Lisa, Michael, and Patrick - starting at 9pm.

Here's the flier for the signing, drawn in collaboration by the artists.

Come out to Quimby's Bookstore tomorrow to watch the ink-shed, and see who will survive to make it to CAKE the next day.

Lit Fest, CAKE, and summer break.

This Sunday, June 9th, I'm going to be hanging out at the CAKE table at Printer's Row Lit Fest from 3pm - 4pm.

I'm scheduled to be there for an hours, but the table has some really great artists filling out the time on both Saturday and Sunday:

Sat, June 8
10-11am, Beth Hetland
12-1pm, Linework
2-3pm, Jo Dery
4-5pm, Corinne Mucha
5-6pm, Sam Sharpe

Sun, June 9
11am-12pm, Jeremy Tinder/Aaron Renier/Trubble Club
12-1pm, Marian Runk
2-3pm, Zak Sally & John Porcellino
3-4pm, Kevin Budnik

The CAKE table is in tent HH3, which is located on Polk Street, between Dearborn and Federal. Come say "Hi"!

The FOLLOWING weekend, June 15th and 16th, I'll be tabling at CAKE - The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo. This is Cake's second year, and the fest is only getting more huge. I'm really looking forward to it.
I'll be at the Yeti Press table all weekend, table 75. I'll have copies of Our Ever Improving Living Room, as well as my CAKE debut Mumblecore Comics.
CAKE is taking place at the Center on Halsted - 3656 N Halsted. More incredible cartoonists than you can shake a stick at will be in attendance.

Finally… I'm going to be taking a little break from regularly updating my journal comic. I've got some full page stories that I'm working on right now, and the deadlines are closing in. I've also started full-time hours at my day job, so I have a lot less time to draw.
Don't worry, I'll still update tumblr, and my blog, and the journal stuff will be intermittent over summer, then full on in the fall again.

Thanks for reading. Hope to see you soon.
